Abstract

  • The number of poor people (population with per capita expenditure per month below the Poverty Line) in Jambi Province in March 2020 reached 277.80 thousand people (7.58 percent), an increase of 4.4 thousand compared to the poor population in September 2019 which amounted to 273.37 thousand people (7.51 percent).
  • The percentage of poor people in urban areas in September 2019 was 9.75 percent, increasing to 10.41 percent in March 2020. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas in September 2019 was 6.44 percent, down to 6.23 percent in March 2020.
  • During the period September 2019-March 2020, the number of poor people in urban areas rose by 8.5 thousand people from 115.16 thousand people in September 2019 to 123.64 thousand people in March 2020, while in rural areas decreased by 4.0 thousand that is, from 158.20 thousand people in September 2019 to 154.16 thousand people in March 2020.
  • The role of food commodities towards the Poverty Line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health) both in urban and rural areas. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Poverty Line in urban areas in March 2020 was 74.67 percent, while in rural areas it was much higher at 77.04 percent.
  • Food commodities that have a major influence on the value of the Poverty Line in urban areas are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filter clove cigarettes, purebred meat, red chillies, chicken eggs, sugar, instant noodles, onions, and wet cakes. Meanwhile, non-food commodities include the cost of housing, gasoline, electricity, education, toiletries, water, and clothes for adult women.
  • In the period September 2019-March 2020, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decrease. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to get closer to the Poverty Line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor is also getting smaller.
